Kelly Franson: Taking a look back at my brain tumor

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - It was April 1, 2010 when I was told I had a brain tumor.  Yes, on April Fool's Day. 

I knew the doctor wasn't joking, but I remember thinking maybe, just maybe, he had made a mistake—wrong exam room, wrong patient, wrong MRI.  But then he showed me the scan. 

 I'm no doctor, but I could clearly see the grape-sized tumor.  I also recognized my nose.  It was my profile, so it must also be my brain.  And my brain tumor.

Fast forward two years, and having once had a brain tumor is something that rarely crosses my mind, no pun intended.  

I was lucky.  My tumor was "the best kind of brain tumor" to have.  

It was found before it caused big problems.  It was in a location that made it fairly easy for a neurosurgeon to remove.

Bluegrass entertainers and fans recall memories with Earl Scruggs

BIG LICK, NC (WBTV) - Bluegrass fans around the world are just learning about the death of Earl Scruggs, the man from Shelby, North Carolina who made such an impression on other musicians.

Scruggs passed away Wednesday morning at 88 of natural causes. Flowers will be placed on his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday morning.

Scruggs' funeral arrangements are incomplete. He's survived by two sons, Gary and Randy. Louise, his wife of 57 years, died in 2006.

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Here's your chance to get FREE legal information from members of the North Carolina Bar Association.  It's really easy.  Just call 866.616.4255 anytime between 7am and 7pm on Friday, March 2nd.  Please keep in mind that this is legal information, and not legal advice.   

Celebrating its fifth anniversary, the 4ALL Service Day is a program of the North Carolina Bar Association Foundation in conjunction with the North Carolina Bar Association.  North Carolina lawyers join forces and take calls from the public at seven call centers throughout North Carolina.  These volunteers provide legal information and referral resources to the callers.

Governor Perdue nominates Ray Grace for Commissioner of Banks

NORTH CAROLINA - Governor Bev Perdue today announced her intention to nominate Acting Commissioner of Banks Ray Grace to serve as Commissioner.

“Ray has helped guide the state’s financial system through the toughest economic times that many of us have ever seen,” Gov. Perdue said. “With more than 35 years of experience at the Office of the Commissioner of Banks, he comes to this job uniquely qualified and able to seamlessly step into this critical role.”

Grace joined the N.C. Office of the Commissioner of Banks (NCCOB) in 1974 as an examiner trainee and served variously as a Consumer Finance Examiner, Commercial Bank Examiner, Special Supervisory Examiner responsible for overseeing troubled bank supervision, and as Director of Bank Applications. 

In 2009, he was named Deputy Commissioner, in charge of supervision of banks and savings banks.  He was appointed Chief Deputy Commissioner of Banks in 2010, overseeing all supervision of depository institutions, mortgage lending, consumer finance lending, and other nondepository entities.

Interim superintendent named for Alexander County Schools

ALEXANDER COUNTY (Alexander County Schools) - Jeffrey P. Peal was named Interim School Superintendent for Alexander County Schools beginning March 1, 2012.

“We are very confident in our initial plan with Dr. Peal serving as interim through June 30, 2012.  He has been a part of our system since 2006,” stated Milton Campbell, School Board Chairman.  “The board pledges due diligence in the search for the best superintendent for Alexander County Schools.”

Dr. Peal has served as Associate Superintendent since 2006.  He has over 25 years of experience in public education.  He served as Executive Director of Human Resources and Personnel for Davie County Schools.  He served as principal at the high school and middle school levels and as an assistant principal.  He taught high school social studies.

Remembering Martin Luther King Jr.

Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Sunday would have been the civil rights leader's 83rd birthday.

Ronald Reagan signed the holiday in honor of King into law in 1983 and was first observed on January 20, 1986.

It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.

This is the first year a memorial will stand in Washington, D.C. in King's honor.
