Alexander County Schools names new superintendent

TAYLORSVILLE, NC (WBTV)- The Alexander County Board of
Education announced Tuesday that Dr. Brock Womble has accepted the
position of Superintendent of Alexander County Schools effective July 1.

"I am very humbled and honored to be
chosen as the next Superintendent of the Alexander County School System.  I look forward to working with the Alexander
County Board of Education, administration, teachers, staff, students, parents
and community," Dr. Womble said in a statement.  "My
wife and I are looking forward to raising and educating our children in
Alexander County as well as being a part of the community,"

Dr. Womble has served as
superintendent of Mitchell County Schools since 2006.  During his tenure in Mitchell County, the
system has seen growth in the graduation rate as well as many of the testing
benchmarks.

GOP race for governor is a battle against McCrory

GOP race for governor is a battle against McCrory

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Observers watching the GOP
governor's race in our state may see it as one goliath being chased by five
much smaller David's.

To voters in Mecklenburg
County, Former Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory is a household name; the former
Charlotte Mayor who lost to Bev Perdue four years ago, is just one of six GOP
candidates in the contest with a big advantage.

So voters may be asking, who
are these other people, and how are they getting their messages out ?

Five of the candidates don't
have big budgets, and that means Jim Harney of Cumberland County is relying on
social media, and said recently on twitter that he supports amendment one, and
told the Charlotte Post that he backs the voter I.D. law.

Greensboro's Scott Jones is
using Facebook to sound off and some of his posts are laced with profanity. He
calls himself an average Joe Mulch man running for governor.

Carolinas flirting with 90° this week

Carolinas flirting with 90° this week

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Just last week we were concerned about frost. This week, some Carolina communities may be sweating through temperatures of 90°.

Normally, we see highs in the mid to upper 70s this time of year, but with plenty of sunshine, early May temperatures will approach the 90° mark late in the week.

A steadily amplifying ridge of high pressure in the mid levels of the atmosphere and near the surface will compress and rapidly heat the air.

That same high pressure will keep rain chances to a minimum, so even with the warm afternoon temperatures, don't expect and showers or thunderstorms to provide any cooling.

Record highs for this week are between 91-93°.

Near-freezing temps roll through the Carolinas

Near-freezing temps roll through the Carolinas

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - People around the Queen City prepared for a low of 34-degrees Tuesday morning and those near freezing temperatures could pose a problem for your plants and any crops.

Terrie Phillips says she's crossing her fingers that the near freezing temperatures don't kill her plants.

"It scares me a little bit. This is kind of a surprise for us. Hopefully one night will not make them disappear," she said.

Early Monday, other areas of North Carolina saw snow.

Sugar Mountain, which is just west of Boone, and Canton - just west of Asheville both had snow fall.

North Carolina is at the southern tip of what some forecasters call a nor'easter that is pounding parts of Pennsylvania and other areas in the northeast with heavier snow.
