Catawba-Wateree basin improves to drought watch

CATAWBA COUNTY (The Catawba-Wateree Drought Management Advisory Group) -  The Catawba-Wateree Drought Management Advisory Group (CW-DMAG) today announced the Catawba-Wateree Basin is starting the new year with an improved drought condition.

The 4,750 square-mile Basin has improved to Stage 0 drought level of the Low Inflow Protocol (LIP) compared to Stage 1 during the fall of 2011. Local water suppliers will provide additional guidance on actions for their jurisdictions as appropriate.

Duke Energy offers incentives to encourage customers to enroll in paperless billing

Duke Energy has launched an initiative to encourage customers to sign up for the company’s Paperless Billing program and help others in the process.

Dubbed the “Go, Get, Give” initiative, Duke Energy’s goal is to sign up 140,000 new paperless billing customers, while, at the same time, contributing $3 per enrollment to various assistance funds that help customers pay their heating bills each winter.

5.9 magnitude earthquake felt across the Carolinas

An earthquake hit the Virginia region about 1:51 pm. and was felt throughout North Carolina -- and as far south as Savannah, GA.

The earthquake was centered in Virginia about 34 miles northwest from Richmond and was a 5.9 magnitude. (Original reports put it at 5.8 strength)

The Pentagon was evacuated at just afterward and the US Capitol was also being cleared.

Ten Western NC farms get grant money for wind and solar projects

Several farms are receiving Recovery Act money for renewable energy projects.

A grant totaling almost $150,000 will help install solar thermal and wind turbine projects in ten Western North Carolina counties. 

Farms in Alexander, Burke, Caldwell, Cherokee, Clay, Cleveland, Graham, Mitchell, Rutherford and Yancey counties will all receive money as part of the federal Recovery Act.

According to the National Weather Service - the smoke and haze is coming from wild land fires that continue to burn in the state of Georgia. Officials say the smoke and haze  could stick around until sometime Saturday afternoon.
