Alexander County man to pay off mortgage with $233,917 Cash 5 win

ALEXANDER COUNTY – Tim Kirby, a supervisor at a cable manufacturer, plans to use the $233,917 he won in the March 29 Cash 5 drawing to pay off his mortgage, fund his children’s education, and purchase a convertible for his wife.

Kirby, who lives in Taylorsville in Alexander County, was at work when he learned his ticket matched all five numbers in the drawing.

“I get the winning numbers texted to me,” Kirby said. “I looked at the first few numbers and then down at my ticket. They all matched. I stood there for a while and just stared back and forth. I just couldn’t believe it.”

Checkers hold Wheels for Forest fundraiser

CHARLOTTE - Hey Checkers fans - the team is getting behind another great cause and this is your chance to help out another very deserving family.

Do yourself a favor - take the three minutes to watch the video attached above.

The Checkers will be holding a special “Wheels for Forest” fundraiser prior to their April 7 game (12 p.m.) to benefit Hickory Ridge High School student Forest Walton, who suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a progressive disease which eventually affects all voluntary muscles and involves the heart and breathing muscles in later stages. Forest was diagnosed at birth and was able to walk, run and play until he was 12, but, due to the progressive nature of the disease, is now confined to a wheelchair.

Forest’s mother transports him in a wheelchair-accessible van, which is currently deteriorating, and his classmates have formed “Wheels for Forest” to help him get new means of transportation.

Team of ten co-workers in Hickory wins $250,000 lottery prize

HICKORY, NC (WBTV) - A group of ten employees at a Hickory food distributor have won $250,000 as a team playing Mega Millions. The group calls itself "The MDI 10" because they work for Merchants Distributors, Inc. Each team member contributes $1 a week so they can play ten sets of numbers in the Friday drawings.

Gary Baker, a produce and floral buyer for the company, also buys tickets for the group. Each Friday on his lunch break, he gets a haircut and buys the Mega Millions tickets for that night's draw. The morning after the Friday, Feb. 17 drawing, Scott Campbell, a produce inspector, checked the numbers as he started his shift at 5 a.m.

"I couldn't even speak," Campbell said, after realizing they had matched all five white balls. "I didn't think anybody would believe me."

He was right.
