Stretching Your Dollar: Jenny's number saves money

Stretching Your Dollar: Jenny's number saves money

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)  -  It is incredible how much you can save with using your rewards cards shopping.   These days it seems every store offers some kind of customer reward program.

You sign up, give them some personal information, and they give you a car for your key chain that enables you the discounts.

But I found a blogger who points out the dangers of giving out those 10 precious personal numbers.  Adam Dachis suggests using "Jenny's Number", 867-5309 from Tommy Tutone's 1982 hit.

I went to Gateway Village outside uptown Charlotte, and Park Road Shopping Center.  After asking 9 shoppers, the general consensus was, the discounts are great, but the emails that follow, not so good.

NC poverty on rise, agencies feeling the effects

NC poverty on rise, agencies feeling the effects

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Michelle Hamilton says a day at Crisis Assistance Ministry often begins with a long line of people waiting for help.

In the last three years, the agency has seen a 100% increase in families seeking assistance.

"We've never seen this many people in need of assistance in the 36 year history of our agency," Hamilton said.

It's a tell-tell sign of a sluggish economy that's contributing to the increasing poverty rate in North Carolina.

Census data released earlier this week show more than 700, 000 North Carolinians are living in deep poverty, meaning they earn around $11,000 a year.

Among those thousands, some of the state's youngest.

Those same census numbers show one in four kids in the Tarheel state lived in poverty last year.

A place called “home” - Every day school buses stop at the Center of Hope to bring more than 100 children “home.” For the sake of these children—more than 1,000 pass through the Center of Hope’s doors each year—the shelter seeks to provide daily stability and a permanent way out of homelessness. As Charlotte’s only 24/7 year-round emergency shelter, the Center of Hope— a 36,000 square-foot facility with 224 beds—routinely operates at capacity. In 2010 it admitted more than 5,710 people, including five women over the age of 85, and welcomed 27 newborns directly from the hospital.  The largest such shelter in the Southeast, the Center of Hope offers a comprehensive program of onsite services, including the nation’s only Boys & Girls Club within a homeless shelter.

NCDOT to motorists: Look out for deer during the Fall

NCDOT to motorists: Look out for deer during the Fall

NORTH CAROLINA - In order to help reduce the number of wildlife-related automobile crashes, the N.C. Department of Transportation reminds motorists to be aware of the increased presence of deer on state roads during the fall months.

More than 19,500 animal-related crashes were reported each of the last three years, and 90 percent of those involved deer. Since 2008, the incidents have resulted in 3,453 injuries to people, of which 17 were fatal, and nearly $136 million in property damage.

“Deer are constantly on the move this time of year, especially in densely populated areas,” said NCDOT Director of Mobility and Safety Kevin Lacy. “Drivers need to be alert at all times. However, if you can’t avoid a deer, it is better to hit it than to lose control of your vehicle and cause a bigger accident.”
