The DNA diet: Is the secret to weight loss in your genes?

The DNA diet: Is the secret to weight loss in your genes?

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A workout with Pulkit Sang is no joke.

"I'll start at a level three on the treadmill, then go up to a six and then a nine and back down again.  I'll do that for about 20 or 30 minutes," Sang said.

He says he's learned what his body needs at the genetic level and that helped him drop pounds and keep them off.

Just two years ago he was more than 50 pounds heavier and had the frustration of trying diet after diet, only to achieve limited and temporary success.

"Every time a new diet fad comes around your ears perk up and you think is this the one?" Sang said.

6-year-old dies from flu, becomes first NC flu death

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina health officials say a six-year-old is the state's first death from the flu this season.

The state Department of Health and Human Services has recorded no other flu deaths since the infection season began in October. North Carolina's flu death toll by the same time last year was 14.
State health officials say the six-year old died more than two weeks ago of complications from an influenza infection. Officials won't name the child's hometown, county or even gender to protect the family's privacy.

The child was at risk for complications from the flu because of other medical conditions.

State Health Director Dr. Laura Gerald says the death is a reminder that flu is a serious illness and can be devastating to people at any age.

Suffering allergy symptoms a little early?

SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - It may not be spring, but the warm weather has triggered allergy symptoms for many in our area, just ask Susan Ballard what her 11 year old daughter is going through.

"My daughter has climate variant asthma, "Ballard told WBTV.  "When there's a variance in the weather she deals with a lot of coughing, especially when she's outside playing, jumping on the trampoline, playing softball things of that nature."

Lots of folks are dealing with now, and for many, it's a few weeks ahead of schedule.

The bad news about Girl Scout cookies

The bad news about Girl Scout cookies

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Every year around this time, the truck parks in the back lot of the Hornet's Nest Girl Scout Council in West Charlotte and the cars file in to pick up the millions of boxes of cookies.

Many people treasure the time when the coveted cookies hit the streets. But we found some not so good facts about the nutrition under the flap.

Last year, Americans consumed more than 210 billion calories worth of Girl Scout Cookies. Samoas are one of the heaviest calorie carriers. One serving holds 140 calories. One serving is 2 cookies.

We spoke with the Executive Director of the Hornet's Nest Council, Katherine Lambert says the cookies are not the most healthy, but they serve a cause that's worth the extra calories. Last year Girl Scouts sold more than $700 million worth of cookies nationally.

Convention host committee looking for Carolinas BBQ sauce

Convention host committee looking for Carolinas BBQ sauce

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - This week, Charlotte in 2012 released a Request for Proposal (RFP) seeking to work with a Barbeque sauce vendor as part of the merchandising effort for the convention. The RFP calls for three different types of BBQ sauces; mustard, vinegar, and tomato, to represent and showcase the different styles from around the Carolinas.  The sauces will be sold together in Charlotte in 2012’s online merchandise store to people from across America.

“I love the food from this region – I even smoke my own pork - so I understand very well the importance of selecting three barbeque sauces that truly represent the flavor of the Carolinas,” said Dan Murrey, Executive Director of Charlotte in 2012. “We expect bids from eastern Carolina, western Carolina and South Carolina…Needless to say it will be a challenge to select the best sauces, but I think I speak for my entire team when I say that we are looking forward to the taste test.”
